The Journey of Glenrowan Providore

Some businesses begin with a detailed business plan.

Glenrowan Providore began with a belief that regional producers deserved better support, better presentation and a stronger connection to the people who wanted to buy from them.

In 2020, during the uncertainty of COVID, many small local producers suddenly lost access to the outdoor markets and events they had relied on for years. Talented makers, growers and small businesses were producing incredible products, yet many had nowhere to sell them.

That moment became the beginning of Glenrowan Providore.

The site itself already carried history and character, evolving from its earlier days connected to Cobb & Co and Ned Kelly-themed tourism into something entirely different — a regional food destination built around local flavour, craftsmanship and High Country hospitality.

From the beginning, the vision was simple:
support local producers and create a true regional food hub for Glenrowan and North East Victoria.

What surprised us most was how naturally the business evolved.

Rather than forcing a rigid business model, we allowed customers, the region and the gaps in the market to shape the direction of the Providore itself. Many of the things we now produce or offer came from recognising what was missing locally and deciding to do it properly ourselves.

Coffee was one of the first examples.

At the time, good coffee in town was difficult to find. We believed regional visitors and locals deserved something far better than average takeaway coffee, so we built our coffee offering around quality beans, proper equipment and consistency.

Gelato followed for similar reasons.

Too much of what was available commercially felt over-aerated, artificial and mass produced. We wanted to create artisan gelato with genuine texture and flavour — something closer to traditional Italian-style gelato rather than cheap supermarket ice cream.

Over time, the Providore continued expanding naturally.

Fresh pasta, regional hampers, whisky projects, King Valley Spices, High Country Fine Foods and eventually hospitality spaces like The BBQ Garden and The Blind Pig all became part of the journey. Each addition came from the same philosophy:
focus on quality, atmosphere and creating experiences that feel authentic to the High Country.

We’ve never been interested in becoming a generic tourist shop.

You won’t find shelves full of cheap imported souvenirs or products that can be ordered online for a fraction of the price elsewhere. Instead, we focus on regional produce, artisan products and carefully selected goods that genuinely reflect the makers, flavours and creativity of North East Victoria.

Many of our hampers are personally curated by Kaylene, whose transition from teaching into the business helped shape much of the direction Glenrowan Providore has taken over the years. Together, we’ve built the business around the idea of creating something meaningful while still building a life heading in the same direction.

Matthew’s background working with regional producers and building online presence through King Valley Online also helped strengthen the focus on storytelling, branding and helping small producers gain visibility beyond traditional markets.

Like any small regional business, the journey hasn’t been without challenges.

Council processes, fees, regulations, marketing pressures and the constant race against time are all part of running a growing business. The biggest challenge is often simply finding enough hours in the day to bring every idea to life while still making time to enjoy the High Country lifestyle that inspired the business in the first place.

But the future of Glenrowan Providore is only becoming bigger.

The next major step is the construction of a new production factory — a project that will allow us to expand manufacturing, create new products, run cooking classes and provide production space for other small makers who may not otherwise have access to commercial facilities without overwhelming costs or regulations.

Long term, the vision extends far beyond a traditional shop.

We see Glenrowan Providore continuing to evolve into a destination venue built around regional flavour, artisan production, hospitality and High Country experiences — including a factory outlet, expanded events, whisky development and future hospitality projects connected to the region itself.

Most importantly, we will continue supporting regional branding and small producers wherever possible.

Because Glenrowan Providore was never only about us.

It was always about helping showcase the incredible makers, flavours and stories that already existed throughout the High Country — and creating a place where people could discover them properly.

That journey is still only just beginning.
